Study Tours: UK or Russia

Ever wanted to travel ?

Why not combine it with your degree!

La Trobe has many overseas study opportunities available for students that can be taken for credit and not for credit. La Trobe’s History department has just announced two study tours in the United Kingdom and Russia for 2019.

There are two 30 credit points subjects on offer for students to undertake: HUS2IST (for second year students) and HUS3STT (for third year students), that will allow them to study for a period of time overseas.

These subjects are open for students who are eligible to study an elective in the Arts/Humanities sector. In one of these fantastic locations: Sheffield, UK or in Russia: Moscow Yaroslavl and St Petersburg. These subjects are inter-disciplinary in their approach and to be eligible you must have completed the required core subjects for your course. For example, second years must have completed their first year core subject (for Bachelor of Arts students, it’s HUS1FAS),  Third years must have completed their second year core (for Bachelor of Arts students, it’s HUS2NGP).

You can enroll online for 2019 or you may need to complete a variation of enrollment form. Then students will need to choose either the Sheffield or Russia option

Sheffield, United Kingdom

Travelling between 30th June and 19th July 2019.

The coordinator for this trip is Dr Emma Robertson. Contact Emma via her email  or phone 5444 7612 to register your interest and get more information.

This will be the fourth trip to Sheffield and the experience is partnered with La Trobe’s partner institution Sheffield Hallam University, where students will have access to the university’s experts and student facilities.

Sheffield was one of the first cities to experience the full impact of the Industrial Revolution, and from the 1980s was also one of the first cities to experience de-industrialisation. Sheffield is now one of the best places to study and is a bustling student city. Plus, you’ll also have the chance to travel to London, Edinburgh and more before/after the tour or on one of the study tour weekends.

The estimated cost for this trip is $6,000 (including flight, accommodation, internal transport in UK, entry fees and some food). The total price will depend on the number of students enrolled, airfares and the currency exchange at the time of the bookings. This is in addition to the subject fees. Some students may be eligible for an OS-HELP loan and the LTU Overseas study grant.

The deposit to secure the accommodation is due at the end of March in 2019.

Russia. Moscow, Yaroslavl and St Petersburg.

Travelling between 19th November and 10th December 2019.

The coordinator for this trip is Dr Adrian Jones. Contact Adrian via his email for more details and you can view the itinerary  here

The Russia study tour will not be running in 2020, so if you’ve always wanted to visit, now’s your chance!

To enroll in the Russia trip you must also register with the travel provider Australians Studying Abroad (ASA) and pay the deposit. Contact Susi at or phone 9822 6899 (Susi is in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays).

The costs for this trip is $6790 including the group airfares, accommodation, all transport, all museum entries, all concerts, all breakfasts, a few meals/lunches where pre-booking is necessary in special locations. Subject fees are additional.

There is also an option to travel and not undertake the study portion and not be assessed. These students will still be a full member of the tour, but will participate as audit students and will need to pay an additional fee of $500 (position preference is given to for-credit students).

This trip needs a minimum of 10 participants and maximum of 20. Students from another university are welcome to join the trip, upon the approval from their university.

All accommodation is twin share, so if you want to travel with a friend make sure you talk to them about it now. There is an option to stay in single rooms at an additional cost of $720. On the train from Yaroslavl on the Volga River to St Petersburg on the Neva River, there will be four people to a cabin.

You can make your own travel arrangements through ASA for before/after the tour dates in Russia, but you must stay with the group for the entire duration of the tour.

To ensure that you meet all the requirements of these subjects and study tours, make contact the relevant coordinator as soon as possible to secure your place.
